Pancake Breakfast Recruits Needed

Whistle while you work. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the kitchen sausage sizzling on the grill, hotcakes stacked high. Hey - it must be The Annual Troop 5 Pancake Breakfast. And back by popular demand, the Breakfast has returned to its traditional spot on the December calendar. Mark your calendars now for December 7. Not only do we need hungry masses to feed, we need scouts and parents to sign up to help coordinate this profitable fund raiser for the Troop. You ask, "But what can I - who knows not how to boil water - do?" PLENTY.

We need parents to help set up for the big event, starting at 6:30 AM, with the scout servers reporting at 7:00, followed by parent kitchen help at 7:01. The breakfast itself runs from 8-11:30 with lots of time slots for you to fit an hour or two of help into your busy Saturday schedule. Food donations are being procured by the relentless supply officer Scoutmaster Gift, while beverage prep courses are currently forming under the tutelage of Coffee Czar Doug. Do we have fun? You bet. Is it a worthwhile cause? Sure it is. Is this just another opportunity to combine scouting and family time? You got it.

Volunteer sign up sheets will be at the November 18 Parent Meeting.

Hawk Mountain Plans Flying High

Scouts and Fathers are highly encouraged to attend this month's trip to Hawk Mountain in the Lehigh Valley. A hike from the Appalachian Trail area up to the Pinnacle allows a panoramic view of 4 counties (and maybe a migrating hawk or two). The vista definitely inspires a Kodak Moment - so pack a camera.

Scouts are reminded to bring their green knot cards and scout handbooks, as camping trips provide the best opportunity to learn a few required knots.

Campers will be sleeping in adirondacks for this trip. Troop 5 Webelos and dads are joining in the fun. Departure time is scheduled for 6:30pm sharp Friday November 22, with a return time of 2:00 pm on Sunday.

New Program: College of Pioneering

This newly formed program to promote basic skills in knot tying excellence is off and running. Not to be confused with PU (Pioneering University), the College of Pioneering offers scouts an opportunity to earn a "diploma" at the different levels of knot tying. Scouts will have an opportunity to work towards and associate's degree., a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and even a doctoral degree. Each scout has been given a record form - their "green card" - and participants are expected to begin the program independently using their handbooks.

Knot Master Todd will work with interested scouts, who make an appointment, at 7:15 on Meeting evenings. Please note, scouts are responsible for holding onto their green record card, there is no double check. There will be no time limit for obtaining your AA, BA, MA or even Doctoral Degree. Graduates of each level will be awarded a colored armband chord to wear under their epaulets. Rumors are swirling that a First Aid Trainers College is in the works, wouldn't that be a FAT College?

Kudos Korner

Congratulations to Frank and Phil on attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
Way to go guys!

Holiday Service Project Reminder

Every year, troop families sponsor a needy family during the winter holidays.

In the past, we have received requests to help out local Bucks County families and we have also supplied food, clothing and toys for indigent families in Philadelphia.

More information on this important service project will follow sometime after Thanksgiving. Your suggestions are always welcome.

Scouting For Food

Wondering what those brown grocery bags labeled "Scouting for Food" that may have come home with your son? Every year, Bucks County Council Boy Scouts of America puts on a food drive to help increase the inventories at local food pantries.

This event is not only sponsored by Scout troops and cub packs, but also through corporate sponsorship. Troop 5 is proud to support this worthy effort. Donations of non-perishable food items should be sent in with or without the brown page bags by the November 18 Meeting.

A Weekend of Service

By Asst Scoutmaster Todd

This past weekend, the troop participated in two worthy service projects.

First, on Saturday morning, fifteen scouts and five adults assembled at the parking area by the Churchville reservoir on Elm Avenue for the troop's biannual road side cleanup.

Many thanks to the following scouts who were able to attend: Eric, Adam, Mike, Colin, Dan, Mike, Dan, Alex, Jon, Nick, Andrew, Phil, Paul, Mike, and Matt.

For those of you that missed this opportunity, there will be another road side cleanup in the Spring.

The second event of the day was the Lion's Club annual spaghetti dinner. Once again, the Northampton Lion's club invited the scouts to serve as waiters and hosts for their annual fund raising dinner.

Scouts began arriving at 3:00pm and some worked past 7:00pm. There seemed to be an unending line of people waiting to be seated. Scoutmaster Gift took advantage of this gathering to promote our own pancake breakfast.

Many thanks to those scouts that were able to attend: Andrew, Adam, Matt, Jason, Kevin, Steven, Patrick, and Jeffrey.

Our thanks to the Lions club for inviting us back and supporting the troop with their annual donation.
