Troop 5 In the News

Several troop members have received academic aclaim last month. Josh won first place in the National Geographic Geography Bee at Richboro Junior High for the second consecutive year. He is now waiting to qualify for the State Geography Championship. There must be some kind of leadership position Josh could qualify for as Chad's Geography Assistant.

Andy has placed fourth for all of Bucks County in the National Mathcounts Competition. ALthough his Richboro Junior High team placed third overall as a school team, the team will not be moving on. Andy, however, as a finalist now goes on to the States Competition later this month. Reports are untrue that Andy's winning response was to the question: How many campers are there in a six-man tent?

And finally, Frank was lauded in the Courier Times for recently being awarded the Eagle Scout rank. Frank has also been awarded a $500 scholarship for further studies while participating in a project at the Philadelphia Auto Show.

Troop 5 scouts not only excel at scouting, but they do well academically.

The Ultimate Camping Trip: Ultimate Commandos

What has 100 legs, blackened faces, is camouflaged in the woods and won't sleep? Answer: Troop 5 on the April camping trip to Firestone Base at Camp Resica Falls. The concept is simple, it's a modern-day version of "Steal the Bacond". The troop will be split up into two teams, each with its own camp. Each team will design and make their own "bacon"., items crafted prior to the trip. The object will be to locate and steal the opposing team's bacon and grab their armbands to capture prisoners as well. Points will be awarded for the number of items captured.

Those of you who didn't sleep through Booby Trapping 101 will be glad you didn't. Those skills will be called into play while preparing your camp. Start planning now.

Camouflage clothing will be the dress code for this affair. So come prepared with dark clothing. Dirty socks are not considered dark clothing, however.

The objective of this trip is to encourage team work while having tons of fun. The ultimate rule, which you will hear over and over, is THINK FIRST. THEN ACT. YOU CAN'T HURT ANYONE.

Extra adults will be needed for this trip because Leadership wants to play. The new Webelos, crossing over in late March, are also invited on the trip. They will be acting as gofers and spies.

Because of the tremendous intrest in this trip and in order to make the teams so that preparations can get under way, an early sign up deadline date of March 17 has been set. In the meantime, you may want to brush- up on your face-painting technique.

Camp Brule

The March camping trip will be to Camp Brule near Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania. The theme for this trip will be hiking and wilderness survival in this picturesque part of Northern Pennsylvania. Scouts will be making shelters out of wood.

Any intrested father who wishes to drive is encouraged to call Steve. The convoy will leave Friday evening from the church lot and rutrn at approximately 3:30 pm Sunday afternoon, after the mandatory Mickey D's stop.

Delmont Adventure

By Andy

This February, from the 14th to the 16th we set out for Delmont Scout Reservation. It was a very uneventful ride there (Chad wasn't with us), and when we got there, everyone was assigned to their bunks for a good night's rest.

Among the scouts on the trip were John, Steve, Andrew, Matt, Alex, Paul, Patrick, Nick, Tim, Adam, Josh, Derek, and Dan.

The next morning we woke up and went on a wood cutting expedition. After the fire was well stocked, about three hours later, all the scouts sat down for an exciting session of KNOT TYING! Most of the scouts were able to attain the Associate's Degree of Knots. (Assos. D.K.)

Next orinteering started. Scouts were put in small groups and sent off to pick their way through the wilderness lookming blindly for a card or a piece of tape. There was the Scoutmaster's Challenge. A one-man, no marker, 5-point course where the prize was a free candy bar! Of course, nobody god close enough to the marker (though there were some who were kinda close).

After the trip up to the snack bar, where orange soda seemed to be the most popular choice (read that, the ONLY choice), the scouts went back to the cabin to eat dinner and go to sleep. The next morning, after a church service on the rocks, everyone left, and we managed to arrive back at the church on time!

Old and Outgrown? Then Recycle It!

UNIFORMS. Not your spouse! As a service to its members, Troop 5 maintains an inventory of "gently worn" scout unifrms from scouts who have outgrown their shirts, etc. If you're spring cleaning some closets and run acorss a uniform not being worn, why not consider donating it to the Uniform Recycling Program. ALl items should be cleaned before donating.

Elm Avenue Cleanup

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 19. Spend a few hours spreading scout spirit and picking up roadside debris. The Scout Oath reminds us to do our duty to our country. Here's your chance., right in your own backyard and receive some service hours, too.

New Bookcase in Scout Room

The troop extends muchos gracias to Chad for building the bookcase and to Tauge Lumber for donating all the supplies. Check out the fine workmanship and the quality materials.

Flower Show Churchville Style

As tiny crocuses poke through the snow, April showers remind us that Flower Sale forms will soon be on their way. As you may know, the annual Flower Sale is a wonderful opportunity for scouts to defray the expense of summer camp and High Adventure.

But this huge fund raiser requires adult volunteers. Anyone interested in picking, sorting orders, or offering any help at all that first week of May, please give Betty a call. If you've never been to a grower's warehouse, it's quite an adventure, one that you will enjoy. So please spare us a few hours.

Tamanend Cub Days

Once again scouts who work as counselors at the Cub Scout Day Camp can earn $50 credit towards their own summer camp.. If you think you may be interested, speak to the Scoutmaster.

Looking AHead

Save April 26 at 4:00 pm for the Eagle Court of Honor for Phil and Mike. Everyone is invited and refreshments will be served.
