The Anthill Times

October 1997

1998 Registration Due Next Week

October means it's time for the troop to register with the Bucks County Council for 1998. The Troop 5 annual dues will once again be $35. Be advised that FLower Sale credits (could you possibly have any left?) may be used for registration. Any Flower Sale credits your scout still has must be used by Decembebr or they will be lost. Use them or lose them.

The dues collected are used to register each boy nationally, subscribe to "Boy's Life," purchase supplemental accident insurance, buy merit badges, support advancement expenses, buy Court of Honor refreshments, fund a donation tto the church, contribute to administrative costs (stamps for the award-winning Anthill Times, etc.) and, lastly support our Scoutmaster's outlandish salary. PLease bring the registration fee of #35, due from each scout, to next Monday's meeeting.

Treasure Island Camping Trip

By Derek

Frisbee Football has been a game that our troop has played for a long time. But it was never as exciting as it was on Treasure Island.

The trip started Saturday at 8:00 AM from the church. Alex got everyone organized and i their vehicles as quickly as he could. After a 40 minute ride, we parked, unloaded the cars and loaded up a big motor boat which took us across the Delaware River to Treasure Island.

We hiked our gear into a small camping area and set up the tents. After scout around to find firewood, the second acttivity of the day began, Frisbee Foottball. There were no real teams in this game (since players continuously switched teams and since new players kept on coming in), but nevertheless, it was still fun. At first, we were only playing for fun, but towards the end of the game we kept score. It was a grueling match, but in the end, one team won 2-1.

THere were a variety of meals cooked on the different campfires that night. There was beef stew, fruit cocktail, hamburgers, ground beef with vegetables, and more. After dinner, we had the final event of the day, Capture the Flag. When it was getting late, Mr. G had to send a couple of scouts to bring back the missing people. They finally came back at 10:30 PM. That was it for Saturday.

Sunday morning we still had time for one more Frisbee Football game. The action was intense. This was a great way to end a camping trip. Afterwards, we loaded the boat with our gear and then unloaded it into "The Animal" and got going. We were back at the church by 1:00 where our parents were waiting.

High Adventure to Philmont Set for June 1999

The troop has managed to secure several of thte elusive but covetted slots available for the June 1999 High Adventure to Philmont Reservatiton in the upper NE corner of New Mexico. The 1998 Philmont Adventure is already closed. This extraordinary trip will be open to all scouts who will be 14 by 1/1/90.

A refundable deposit of $100 is now being collected on a first come, first served basis by Chad. The dates of the trip will be June 26 - July 13, 1999. This is slightly longer than last year's 11 day excursion becausee traiing sessions and a rafting trip will also be included in the fee.

Thee excptional scenery and great camping experience are certainly a once in a lifetime experience for anyone. If there are any Dads out there who might be interested in hiking along, please speak to Wendell. Rumor has it that John M has been practicing burro racing all year so that he can top his Philmont 1997 scores. Philmont is that type of incredible adventure that only Boy Scouting can offer!

Plans for the 1998 High Adventure will involve a less expensive trip, but will be geared towards preparing for the Philmont trip.

Rock Climbing Programm Soaring Again

Chad has lifted the rock climbing program to new heights. New equipment has been procured and old equipment has been checked and readied. There will probbably be only one more rock climbing expedition to High Rocks near Ockanickon before winter sets in. Chad is clambering tto organize tthis final climb for the first or second weekend of November. If you are interested in scaling to new heights this year, see Chad soon.

Pancake Breakfast Saturday 12/6

Our annual pancake breakfast is planned for Saturday, December 6. Sometime in early November, we will be distributing tickets.

Insurance Info for Transportation Needed

Once again Steve L is requesting that any parent who thinks they just might drive for any scout function, please fill out the insurance forms that the Bucks County Council requires we have. Steve has plenty of extras to hand out, just ask him if you've misplaced yours.

At this point, only two parents have indicated their willingness to help out with the driving for trips or to be called ina n emergency to lend a hand with transportation. This is your troop and your troop needs your support.

Eagle Scout Service Project

Mike is looking for your help. On Sunday, October 26 and Saturday, November 1, Mike will be at Tammenand Park working a revitalization project.

Just bring your body and a pair of gloves. Stay tuned at the meetings for information on the work hours.

I understand that Mike will be serving Pizza! Working ono Mike's project is a great way to earn service hours and show Scout spirit towards your next rank.
